Miss Janet Jackson
It goes without saying that when someone thinks of great entertainers within the music industry, at the top of the list will always be the surname Jackson.
Albeit the Jackson 5, the undisputed King of Pop Michael Jackson, or his incomparable baby sister Janet Jackson, the Jacksons have single handedly shaped the music industry for decades on end. On Thursday, March 24th, TTR had the honor of attending the 8:00 p.m. sold out “Up Close and Personal” concert tour of the youngest of the Jackson clan, Miss Janet Damita Jo Jackson.
After somewhat of an extended hiatus from the stage, disappointing sales of her last two projects "20 Y.O." (2006) and "Discipline" (2008) and a few notable success on the big screen headlining Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married” (2007), “Why Did I Get Married Too” (2010), and “For Colored Girls” (2010), Janet Jackson is back to what she does best, performing the hits that made her one of the worlds biggest and well known stars.
No sooner that Janet appeared on stage, the sold out Constitution Hall erupted into full blown screams and cheers.
***Sidebar*** we would be absurdly remiss if we didn’t mention that at age 44, (45 in May), Janet Jackson looked absolutely AMAZING! For most of the evening, Janet donned a fitted black leather outfit that most 24-year-olds would be afraid to wear. We were totally impressed to say the very least.
Now back to the show.
As Janet and her crew pulled out of park and took her audience on a ride back down memory lane, she took a page from her big brothers playbook (Dangerous Tour 1992 Live in Bucharest). After the competition of her first song, Janet stood completely motionless, eyes riveted on the crowd for a long moment as to take in her own brilliance, all the while soaking in the screams and applause that her fanatic fans willingly gave her. After her short moment of self-assurance, Miss Jackson was back at it again; #1 song after #1 song, Janet had the crowd singing along and flashing back to times when the music industry was purely about great lyrics and amazing musicality. She even managed to throw in clips from her many television and theatrical performers on the big screen during an outfit change. She confirmed her place as one of the most versatile entertainers with clips from as far back as Penny on “Good Times” and Charlene on “Different Strokes to Justice in “Poetic Justice” and the wild and manic Patricia in “Why Did I Get Married Too”.
While Janet’s dancing has surely been toned down from her earlier years (which of course is to be expected), overall, her performance was definitely spot on and worth the money spent on admission.
On a scale from one (1) to five (5) the Janet Jackson “Up Close and Personal” tour gets a four (4). If Miss Jackson is scheduled to make a stop in your city, be certain to check her out.
